Manchester United tried to sign Franco Mastantuono from River Plate early in the summer.
In May, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming United held talks with the 18-year-old’s representatives over a potential move to Old Trafford. Eventually, Mastantuono decided to join Real Madrid, where he has immediately established himself as key part of Xabi Alonso’s squad.
Now, the Red Devils are set to lock horns with Los Blancos for “the new Mastantuono”, Gilberto Mora.
Manchester United in three-way battle for Mora
According to Defensa Central, United, Real and Paris Saint-Germain are all chasing Mexican sensation Mora.
The 17-year-old, who made his senior debut for Tijuana in 2024, is a tricky winger, who uses his low centre of gravity to wriggle past defenders. The right-footed forward possesses remarkable close control and link up ability in tight areas.
At 16, he was part of the Mexico side that went on to lift the CONCACAF Gold Cup in July. In the process, he overtook Lamine Yamal and Pele as the youngest-ever player to win an international trophy.
Mora was also the standout player in FIFA U-20 World Cup, scoring three goals and assisting twice in five appearances in Chile.
Man United willing to go all out to sign Mora
Defensa Central claim United are keeping a close eye on Mora’s situation. It is understood the Premier League giants and PSG are “willing to put a lot of money on the table” to sign the Mexican talent.
United’s determination to sign Mora could reportedly drive up his price and force Real to pull out of the race.
Further, it is believed United are aware they will have to act swiftly and decisively to beat the Champions League giants.
Accordingly, they are “already thinking about a key date for his departure from Mexico.”
Having said that, Premier League clubs can only sign players from abroad who are over the age of 18 due to Brexit-related regulations. As such, United will have to wait until 2027 if they are to sign Mora.
