BREAKING NEWS: Premier League FA releases OFFICIAL statement on Cucurela potential penalty – Error made in the VAR review due to quick decisions – Congratulations Arsenal fans
Chelsea star Wesley Fofana escaped a red card in the first-half of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Arsenal.
On-field referee Chris Kavanagh didn’t award a spot-kick for the Gunners and VAR stuck with that decision. Not long later, Fofana was involved in an incident with Declan Rice.
The Chelsea defender fouled the midfielder close to the halfway line before accidentally stamping on his left hamstring. Rice was quick to demand a further punishment for the France international after following through on him.
VAR briefly checked the incident while the Chelsea defence organised themselves for the free-kick. Fortunately, he escaped any punishment and remained on the pitch.
It seemed that VAR didn’t deem the challenge as dangerous, with it appearing to be an accident rather than the defender looking to stamp on Rice. For guidance, the VAR check deemed there was a lack of force in the challenge with Fofana making contacting with the ball first.
Arsenal made their dominance pay in the first-half with Mikel Merino heading past Robert Sanchez. Marc Cucurella came close to equalising for Chelsea after David Raya’s error.
