Arsenal’s pursuit of Alexander Isak has been boosted with Newcastle keeping tabs on a possible replacement forward.
The north London side have been linked with the 25-year-old Swedish striker since last summer. Their interest has only intensified in light of their recent struggles in front of goal, which cost them in back-to-back defeats by Newcastle and Manchester United this month, following injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka.
Newcastle have shown no interest in parting ways with their star player, reportedly telling Arsenal it would take a bid of more than £115million to convince them to sell Isak- who has been in sensational form this campaign with 15 Premier League goals to his name.
But Arsenal appear to have now been given some hope in their pursuit of the rangy forward. According to The Chronicle, Newcastle have made their ‘first move’ to sign Lille striker Jonathan David as a free transfer this summer, suggesting they may be preparing for life without Isak.
The report claims the Magpies were represented by a ‘high-level club employee’ in the stands for Lille’s recent 2-1 victory over Nice. Newcastle are said to have joined the race to sign him once his contract expires at the end of this season.
The Canada international has spoken candidly about a Premier League switch in the summer, though he’s not exclusively looking to move to England. David explained: “I think obviously the Premier League is regarded as one of the best leagues in the world. And for me it’s not the Premier League or bust. I’m open to anything and every league has its challenges.”
His successful audition against Liverpool in the Champions League certainly would have caught the eye of Newcastle’s hierarchy on Tuesday night. The 25-year-old showed he has what it takes to go against the very best the Premier League has to offer, scoring at Anfield to cancel out Mohamed Salah’s opening goal, before Harvey Elliott clinched the win over a Lille side which was already down to 10 men.
Whether Newcastle have identified David as a successor to Isak or merely as a strike partner remains unclear. In any case, bringing David to St. James’ Park would make Eddie Howe less reliant on the Swede while paving the way for his exit, should a substantial offer come in from Arsenal.
