‘Chelsea made a call again’: Todd Boehly now wants to HIGHJACK another 25-year-old Arsenal target just as He did to Mudryk
Chelsea have reportedly been in contact with VfL Wolfsburg defender Ridle Baku over a potential transfer, a player Arsenal are also interested in signing the fullback.
According to journalist Christian Falk, Todd Boehly and his team were reached out to the Bundesliga defender in January to discuss a transfer, with the expectation being that Chelsea could once again make a move to sign Baku in the summer.
Falk said: “Ridle Baku of Wolfsburg got the call from Arsenal. The Gunners are interested in the German player who can play right-back and right-wing. But they’re not alone in their interest, as Chelsea made a call themselves during the winter window. Villarreal also want to make a bid this summer.”
Regarded by many as one of the best fullbacks in Germany, Baku could provide some good competition for many of the Premier League’s biggest clubs in the upcoming season. However, Chelsea could be a poor move for the 25-year-old defender.
With Malo Gusto set to join from Olympique Lyonnais this summer, Chelsea will have two quality right-backs who are both younger than Baku, who will not want to play third-choice for a club that might not even be competing in Europe next season.
Moreover, given the problems Chelsea have in their squad, spending resources on a right-back will be a move from Boehly that will again anger supporters, with central midfield, striker and goalkeeper all key areas that should come first for the west London side.
Chelsea should stop Baku interest before they get ahead
Baku could fit Chelsea’s profile to an extent if Reece James was to again pick up a long-term injury. However, with the England international now back to his best and set to have quality cover in Gusto for next season, signing the Wolfsburg man would be an unusual move for the Blues.
As mentioned, Chelsea have bigger problems in their squad than bolstering out their right-back options, and with Arsenal and Villarreal in the race to sign Baku, Frank Lampard’s side should stop whilst their ahead for the German international.
