Arsenal could have a chance of signing former Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino before the end of the season, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.
Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jacobs said that there is a possibility the Brazilian will be let go by his current team Al-Ahli, as he is no longer registered for league fixtures:
âI think that right now, there probably isnât a free agent in the market that fits the kind of profile Arsenal are looking for. The one name that I would keep an eye on is just Roberto Firmino and his situation at Al-Ahli.â
âAs of now, Firmino is not a free agent, and Al-Ahli donât want to terminate his contract, because even though heâs not registered for Saudi Pro League games, after Galeno arrived, and they had to remove somebody from their roster, heâs still eligible for the Asian Champions League. And Al-Ahli want to keep Firmino until the end of the season and then resolve his future then.â
Firminoâs goal record in English football
The 33-year-old found the back of the net 111 times and provided 75 assists in 362 appearances for Liverpool, meaning he averaged a goal contribution every 1.95 games.
That is a pretty decent return so you could see why Arsenal would be tempted to go after Firmino if he does become available. One factor that does count against him, though, is the fact that he has been playing in the Saudi Pro League for the last 18 months. Could he really make an impact in the Premier League during the last few months of the campaign?
Arsenal need solutions up front
Manager Mikel Arteta was forced to use midfielder Mikel Merino as an emergency striker against Leicester. The decision paid off as the Spaniard scored a brace to seal victory at the King Power Stadium.
It is up for debate whether they can really utilise Merino in that position full-time. Firmino would certainly be a better fit but, at this moment in time, he remains unavailable.
