Manchester United have appointed Omar Berrada as their new Chief Executive Officer, and he is set to join them in the summer after leaving Manchester City.
The Etihad Stadium club manager Pep Guardiola has reacted to the development which has left his side shocked, insisting that his appointment will not suddenly turn around the fortunes of the Red Devils on and off the pitch.
Berrada played a major role in the recent successes enjoyed by Man City, and soon-to-be Man United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe did not hesitate to recruit his services once it became clear he was open to joining the Red Devils.
“Maybe United think with this person everything is going to change – congratulations,” Guardiola said.
“Obviously, Omar’s knowledge goes to United, that’s the reality. The club will move forward. We will adapt. He is a lovely person, an incredible character, and an incredible professional.
“Yesterday I saw him, we hugged and I wished him all the best, deeply I wish him the best because he’s a fantastic person. But I don’t know if [by] doing this (clicks his fingers) everything is going to be sorted and it works. If it does happen then oh my god they have to make a stand for Omar Berrada in the future because he’d deserve it.”
The new Man United CEO is certainly no magician and things will not change immediately at the Old Trafford club, but his arrival should be the start of major changes expected to take place in the coming months
The Red Devils have been in a mess since Sir Alex Ferguson left, with a recent report from CIES Football Observatory showing that they failed to generate much-needed income from the sales of non-academy players between 2014 and 2023, recording losses of €328 million (£280m) after getting €398m on player sales and spending €726m on recruitment within that time frame.
It is no longer business as usual at Man United following the arrival of Ratcliffe and his team, and while signings are unexpected this month, major departures and arrivals are being lined up ahead of the summer transfer window.
Berrada will be working across both the football and business sectors at the Theatre of Dreams, and he will be keen to impress after joining the bitter rivals of his former employers.
