Deal Close: Club tweets Arsenal top transfer target is leaving as the player arrives in London ahead of Arsenal medical scheduled to hold today
Arsenal could reportedly attempt to hijack Liverpool’s deal to sign Real Sociedad ace Martin Zubimendi this summer, as per the journalist David Lynch.
The Gunners are seemingly prioritising strengthening their engine room in this transfer window as they have been linked with a plethora of names over the last few weeks.
Douglas Luiz, Amadou Onana and Bruno Guimaraes were all suggested as potential targets earlier this window. But, while the Brazilian has joined Juventus, the Belgian has opted to move to Aston Villa.
Along With them, Zubimendi was also mentioned as a key target but it looked like Arsenal decided to cool their interest in him and shifted their focus on the Spaniard’s colleague Mikel Merino to bolster the engine room.
Mikel Arteta’s side have already agreed on personal terms with him and are currently in talks with Real Sociedad to lure him to the Emirates Stadium this summer.
Zubimendi to Arsenal
Amid this situation, it has been reported that Liverpool have started exploring the possibility of signing Zubimendi as they are considering reinforcing their engine room before the end of this window.
However, speaking on his YouTube channel, Lynch has stated that there is a possibility that other clubs could hijack Liverpool’s deal to sign Zubimendi and Arsenal may be one of those if they decide to revive their interest.
However, the journalist also says that it looks like Arsenal currently have other targets to bolster the midfield so they may not look to lure him to the Emirates Stadium before the end of this window.
Lynch said:
“It’s worth mentioning that now this news is out there, there’s always a possibility that other clubs could come in and compete for his signature. Whether that’s Arsenal maybe reigniting their interest, although it seems that they’ve got other midfield targets.”
It has been reported that Zubimendi has a £51m release clause in his current contract so Arsenal will have to splash a big fee to sign the Spain international.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually opt to formalise their interest in signing him
