DEAL CONFIRMED: Arsenal set to announce the most expensive signing of the summer that will break the internet, internal agreement as club now finalizing medical to be announced tomorrow morning – congratulations Arsenal fans
Fabrizio Romano reported on Friday that Arsenal are advancing in negotiations to sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig, after opening concrete talks for the striker last week.
Romano added that discussions were proceeding well with all parties, including the player’s camp, but he clarified that there’s no club-to-club agreement yet and none expected this weekend.
John Cross confirms for the Mirror that Arsenal are pushing on Sesko after holding further talks, and Leipzig are willing to sell for the right offer
Part of the reason talks are now advancing appears to be that Arsenal have reached a consensus behind the scenes on their priority striker target this summer.
Mikel Arteta has always been keen on Sesko, but new sporting director Andrea Berta initially pushed Viktor Gyokeres as an alternative option.
Tom Canton reports for Football.London that it’s now a unanimous decision that Sesko is the correct choice and the front runner to join Arsenal ahead of Gyokeres.
Contrary to some recent speculation online, it’s not that Gyokeres would prefer to go elsewhere.
In fact, Cross reports for the Mirror that the Swedish striker would favour a move to Arsenal over all other interested clubs, including other Premier League sides and clubs in Spain and Italy.
It would be foolish to completely rule out Arsenal ultimately moving for Gyokeres. Until the Gunners reach an agreement with Leipzig, it’s always possible the Sesko move will fall through, and Gyokeres appears the favourite of the remaining options if that happens.
But if Arsenal get their way, it will be the Slovenia international linking up with Arteta’s squad for pre-season in July.
