‘Deal getting closer’: Arsenal given chance to sign ‘world-class’ striker who’s won two league titles – Romano

Arsenal have been offered the chance to sign striker Mauro Icardi from French champions Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

PSG have put together a high-earning squad of big names and there are consistently big players on the fringes who could move.

Fabrizio Romano has told Caught Offside that the gunners were handed the chance to land Icardi this summer, but Edu said no.

That is because he only had eyes for Gabriel Jesus, who he has now managed to sign from Premier League holders Manchester City.

Arsenal offered Mauro Icardi

Romano said: “Arsenal have had many opportunities that they have turned down, but this happens in all the top clubs every day.

“For example, Mauro Icardi was an option offered to the club in recent months and it was decided not to proceed.

“Because they were looking for a different striker, Edu has always had Gabriel Jesus in mind as a priority.

“Sometimes the refusal is for technical reasons, other times for economic reasons.”

Icardi has won two Ligue 1 titles at PSG, and has been described as world class by Giorgio Chiellini in his autobiography in 2020.

He wrote: “Among the great attackers I have faced, I highly value Icardi, who inside the area is almost impossible to mark.

“Mauro against Juve has often scored, it hurt me. He’s a world-class centre-forward, even if he lacks something in the collective game. He’s a Trezeguet but with different characteristics, lethal in the aerial game.”

Icardi has slipped down the PSG pecking order, and that his status is clear from the way he has apparently been offered in connection with an exit this summer, but it looks like Arsenal made the right call with Jesus.
