Manchester United’s first match under Ruben Amorim was not the seamless coming together of a new look team. These things take time.
After watching from afar and guessing how the Manchester United players will suit his system, Ruben Amorim now has some data and footage to get into.
Even on first watch of Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town, Ruben Amorim has some takeaways.
One of them was how impressed he was with Andre Onana’s passing. Another came with what he saw from Alejandro Garnacho in attack.
Ruben Amorim on Alejandro Garnacho
Alejandro Garnacho got in behind the Ipswich defence twice, but he could not quite separate himself from the final defender to get free enough to shoot at goal.
But it was Garnacho’s ability in possession with the ball in the build-up that really impressed the new head coach, as he explained after the game.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Amorim said: “You start discovering things that you didn’t know like Garna [Alejandro Garnacho], can hold the ball between lines.”
He explained that Garnacho’s clever movement gives him the opportunity to get free in the first place.
“You can understand that by seeing the games because he’s always open so you try to find these things,” Amorim added.
Amorim’s learning curve
Ruben Amorim is adjusting to his new Manchester United players as much as they are acclimatising to his methods.
Learning their strengths and weaknesses will help him define his own expectations for them, and his decision-making over which positions he selects them in.
Garnacho is a player who will benefit from Amorim’s coaching. He is talented, yet raw, still only 20-years-old.
With a busy schedule of games over the next month, Garnacho will get lots of chances to show what he can do. The fact he started Amorim’s first match is a positive – but he can take nothing for granted.
