Richard Rios was one of the stars for Colombia in the recently concluded Copa America in which his country finished second to Argentina. Led by a buoyant James Rodriguez, the South American nation were one of the most exciting teams to watch in the tournament.
The 24-year-old central midfielder was a standout player in the tournament and looks like a huge talent for the present and the future. Rios currently plays for Palmeiras but with clubs like Man Utd interested, it won’t be for much longer.
The 13-cap international started all six games for his nation in the Copa America, even scoring a goal against Panama in the quarterfinals. Goal Brazil has revealed that Man Utd are preparing an offer for the 24-year-old for around £17m but Palmeiras are in no necessity to sell.
The Brazilian club have already made huge money from selling Endrick to Real Madrid, Estaveo to Chelsea and Luis Guilherme to West Ham United meaning they are under no pressure to sell Rios despite his breakout tournament.
Brazilian ‘Globo’ journalist Eduardo Rodrigues explained to SPORT that the only way Palmeiras would consider letting the player leave would be if a club was to trigger his release clause which is set at around £76.7m.
Along with Man Utd, the report adds that Serie A giants Milan and Juventus are also interested in the player’s signature but having signed him only in 2023, Palmeiras are in no mood to entertain offers from these European giants.
The Red Devils have a track record of missing out on signing when they are available for a cheap price and eventually regretting their mistake later on. However, Dan Ashworth & co. seem to be doing things differently of late.
Whilst Richard Rios will be a good addition to the Man Utd midfield, one swallow does not make a summer. One tournament is not enough sample size to pay the kind of money Palmeiras are asking and this might be one deal we must pass on for the time being.
