Journalist Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that his sources do seem sceptical about the likelihood of Arsenal signing Joao Felix amid reports that the Gunners lead the race for the Atletico Madrid starlet.
Felix looks set to leave the Spanish capital next month. He has been offered to host of clubs, including Chelsea, Newcastle and the Gunners – according to 90min.
Atleti have no intention of selling the Portuguese on the cheap. In fact, 90min suggested that they want at least £100 million for the 23-year-old.
Arsenal unlikely to sign Joao Felix
Despite the price-tag, it appeared that there was a good chance that he may end up at the Emirates. Marca reported that Arsenal appeared to be the favourites for his signature.
Mikel Arteta’s men need to bolster their attacking ranks next month after losing Gabriel Jesus to injury. And for many, Felix would be an extremely exciting signing.
Unfortunately for those supporters, Jones has suggested that Felix moving to Arsenal is currently looking unlikely.
“I’ve seen a lot about Arsenal becoming the most serious contenders for him,” he told Give Me Sport.
“But the people I speak to around the club do seem slightly sceptical about that happening.”
Felix is a special talent with an incredibly high ceiling. His move to Atletico has not exactly worked out. But Diego Simeone’s side tend to adopt a more cautious approach. So his record of one goal every four games is not terrible given how he can play anywhere across the forward line.
Nevertheless, Arsenal may feel that going near his asking price is too risky given what is at stake this season.
He is a ‘world-class‘ prospect. And if there is any chance of a loan deal, Arsenal simply must do all they can to get a move across the line next month.
But there may be some supporters who are not too disappointed to learn that Jones has his doubts about the possibility of a switch.
