‘drop Garnacho for us because He is too slow in decision making,is time we give this youngster another chance’: Tim Sherwood urges Erik ten Hag to start ‘dream’ Manchester United player instead of Garnacho
Erik ten Hag will be breathing a little easier now because he will be well aware that Manchester United now have a real chance of securing Champions League football.
Yes, the performance at Aston Villa wasn’t great, but all that matters is the three points and how the gap to fourth-placed Tottenham is only six points.
The man to thank for that is super-sub Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Scott McTominay because he came up with yet another big moment for his team.
Tim Sherwood thinks the hard-hitting midfielder is a ‘dream’ player for Erik ten Hag and believes he should now be starting games for Manchester United, as he told Premier League Productions (12/02/24 at 5:40 pm).
Whilst the former Premier League boss acknowledged that Scott McTominay shouldn’t be starting ahead of his captain Bruno Fernandes, he feels he could start ahead of Alejandro Garnacho.
Given that the teenager starts on the flanks, that would require some tinkering, including possibly playing Bruno Fernandes out wide, which he has done before.
Either way, Tim Sherwood praised the Scotland star for stepping up to the plate once again.
Should Scott McTominay start for Manchester United?
“The kid is coming off, not sulking because he hasn’t been selected, he is coming on with something to prove all of the time,” said Sherwood.
“For me, he should start for Manchester United. I would play him as a ten. No, (I wouldn’t play him for Bruno Fernandes). Bruno is a top football player. His attitude sometimes lets him down, but I think he is top draw.
On who he would leave out for McTominay: “Maybe Garnacho, at times. I think you could play McTominay off Hojlund. I think he would like a bit of company up there, now and again. McTominay’s numbers are incredible.
“I have to take my hat off to him, for a manager, he is a dream.”
Scott McTominay better suited from the bench
There is a reason why McTominay hasn’t been starting on a regular basis for Man United and it’s because his performances have been lacking when he has been handed those chances.
It needs to be noted that Man United are sitting sixth for a reason and they have been struggling for large parts of this campaign, only to pick things up in recent weeks.
Ten Hag would be better suited to continue using McTominay as an impact sub because it is proving to have a devastating effect on the team.
Plus, the opposition will fear and they will know exactly what is coming their way when he is brought onto the pitch, which just helps Man United’s cause even further.
