Manchester United secured a vital win over Southampton on Saturday, but now it’s about making sure they can build on it.

There were plenty of occasions last season when Erik ten Hag’s team took one step forward and then one or two steps back. The upshot was a lowly eighth place finish in the Premier League, ensuring there’s no Champions League football for United this term.

With no European action for them this week, Ten Hag’s men will take on Barnsley in a midweek EFL Cup clash. After that comes a Premier League trip to Selhurst Park, where they were beaten 4-0 by Crystal Palace at the end of last season.

Sancho sends message to United

Jadon Sancho marked his Chelsea debut with a vital contribution after joining the Blues on loan from Manchester United on deadline day. The winger was given 45 minutes by Enzo Maresca away to Bournemouth, but set up the winning goal for fellow substitute Christopher Nkunku.

After the game, Sancho spoke of the warm welcome he has received in West London. His comments come off the back of a rocky relationship with United boss Ten Hag, who froze him out for the majority of the 2023-24 season and allowed him to spent time on loan at Borussia Dortmund before his latest switch.

“First of all it is amazing to make my debut for Chelsea,” Sancho told Sky Sports. “Just being back playing I’m very grateful. The team played very well and we are happy with the three points.

“I’ve been working hard for this moment and I’m just happy that I got my chance. I had a great end to last season being in the Champions League final. I’m just happy to make my debut for Chelsea. I have to thank all the staff and my team-mates. The first day I came in, they made me feel welcome and I’m so happy to feel this comfortable.”
