Man Utd don’t seem to be done in the transfer market despite already having signed four players. Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui (in that order) have been signed on as new Red Devils but the club want more.
It’s clear that Dan Ashworth & co. want to sign a midfielder who can replace/support Casemiro before the transfer window ends.
However, it looks like Man Utd are set to look at other market opportunities including another striker.
As per The Independent, Man Utd could plot a tactical offer for Brentford striker Ivan Toney after seeing a drop in his £100m valuation. The Bees have now reduced their expectations and are willing to accept around £60m to sell him.
The Red Devils may have a plan to test Brentford’s resolves with a loan with an obligation to buy late in the transfer window.
This is seen as a tactical move from the English club who have spent money on signings already this summer and still need a midfielder. This way, they would be kicking the can down the road for Toney’s signing but still manage to enjoy his services.
We covered a story some time ago revealing that Toney is prepared to join Man Utd this summer, should they make an offer. Despite having the striker situation sorted with Hojlund and Zirkee, the Red Devils are still interested in the 28-year-old Englishman.
Hindsight is always easy to analyze in football and Man Utd could have been a bit more patient before signing Zirkzee. With a young and promising striker like Hojlund, the club would have been better off signing a more experienced striker like Toney.
If the Red Devils end up signing the 28-year-old this summer, it could cause an overbooking of options in the striker position. That said, Zirkzee can also play a slightly withdrawn role behind Hojlund or Toney if the need arises.
£60m is still a high fee to pay for a player whose contract is set to expire in less than 12 months. Toney will be a free agent next summer and Man Utd must not pay so much money to sign him right now. Let’s see how things pan out with respect to this situation in the coming days.
