The season has not even started and already Manchester United are in defensive difficulties.

After a 2023/24 season which saw countless injuries to Manchester United’s group of defenders, this summer has already seen the trend continue.

Leny Yoro picked up a three-month injury during the first half of his second game at United during pre-season against Arsenal.

But following this, the woes have continued with Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw all doubts for the Community Shield on Saturday.

With a clear crisis in the position, United are looking to strengthen.

Manchester United open contacts with Mario Hermoso
With United’s search for a defender ongoing, it seems a new option has just emerged and it could be one which is excellent value.

Spanish journalist Maximo de la Cruz Ramirez reported on Friday that United have now begun talks with Mario Hermoso who is a free agent right now.

After departing Atletico Madrid after his contract expired, the defender has been searching for his next club – and it could be United who try to sign him.

Negotiations are only in the initial phase, but the defender wants a gross salary of £5.1m along with a three-year contract.

The 29-year-old cost Madrid €25m which is £21m, so to poach him for free is quite a coup for whichever club he ends up at.

Hermoso would be a strong signing
If United are to bring in Hermoso, it is a move which would significantly bolster the ranks at the club, giving a very solid option and back-up to Lisandro Martinez.

Hermoso can also play left-back which would be a bonus for United should the club make a real move to sign him this summer.

Hermoso excels on the ball and ranks highly among his positional peers for passing, dribbling and even creating chances which is the kind of defender Erik ten Hag will love.
