Arsenal star enjoyed his best moment since completing his £65million move from Chelsea on Saturday with the winner in the Gunners’ 1-0 Premier League win over Brentford.
Havertz, 24, came off the bench in the 79th minute before heading Bukayo Saka’s cross past Mark Flekken to send the north Londoners to the top of the Premier League. The strike is only Havertz’s second goal since moving to the Emirates Stadium after a difficult start to life in red.
The Germany international has featured in all of Arsenal’s games this season but was named on the bench by Mikel Arteta after going five games without contributing to a goal. Having spent part of the international break at left-back with his nation, the 24-year-old was the hero for the Gunners at Brentford.
And after referee Tim Robinson blew the full time whistle, the Arsenal players made their way to the travelling supporters in the corner at the Gtech Community Stadium. Some may have noticed Arteta getting Havertz into a headlock and dragging him to the away fans to celebrate the moment.
“We are so happy, I think we fully deserved to win the game,” Arteta said on Sky Sports after the game. “I thought we played extraordinarily well, we had some big moments, we should’ve scored much earlier than that but it’s a tough place to come to, they never make it easy.
“You saw him much it meant to everyone,” Arteta added on Havertz. “They love him. Today, we believed he could change the game with the way they were defending and he did so that’s what big players do.”
Former Premier League striker Peter Crouch was also complimentary of Havertz. “Being a player that thrived off the back post crosses myself, I know how it feels when you see that cross because your eyes light up,” he said.
“He would’ve been the same, it’s his movements that get him the goal because you see him come alive just before Saka pulls his foot back to cross the ball. It’s perfection, that ball. I said earlier about Jesus’ chance and how he should’ve headed the ball down into the ground, Havertz there was exactly what he should’ve done before.
“He’s had big moments in his career, he had big moments for Chelsea obviously in the Champions League Final. But to me, he seems like a confidence player, like a bit of a streaky player. If that goal can galvanise him, he could go on a good run now and get him going.”
