Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo is continuing his impressive season and played his role in an important away victory at the weekend.
Teenage midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has established himself as a regular starter in Manchester United’s team, and has helped turn the team’s form around in recent weeks.
He has added goals to his game lately, netting a memorable winner in the victory at Wolves, earning the praise of his teammates and manager.
There is even a battle brewing over Kobbie Mainoo’s international future, with the midfielder wanted by both England and Ghana, eligible for both.
Rio Ferdinand spoke to Kobbie Mainoo
Former Manchester United captain Rio Ferdinand spent time at Carrington last week, and said he sought out Kobbie Mainoo for a brief chat.
Speaking to Five, he explained the message of advice he had to pass onto the young Manchester United midfielder.
Ferdinand said: “I see him at training ground the other day and I said, just keep that hunger, the hunger that you walked into this season with, that’s the hunger you need the whole of your career, you don’t need to step off. Maintain the same hunger.”
He added that he was was very pleased by the way Mainoo reacted, commenting: “The kid’s got a steeliness to him. He don’t look like someone who is going to get too high and too low, he’s balanced.”
Kobbie Mainoo can play attacking role
Kobbie Mainoo played a part in the lead up to Manchester United’s winner against Aston Villa, passing the ball to Diogo Dalot, whose cross set up Scott McTominay‘s header.
Ferdinand says that he is convinced Mainoo can play an attacking role, even though he could be just as good further back.
Mainoo created four chances in the win over Villa, and Ferdinand doubled down on his previous comparison to Clarence Seedorf.
He said: “He’s good enough to play six or eight or 10. You saw his footwork for the second goal. He’s good enough to play there. Their rotations in play sometimes he stands in the number 10 position then he shifts back into an eight. That is the freedom he has in that system.
“He’s got that fleet of foot. That footwork there, that’s Seedorf, that’s what Seedorf did. I’m not imagining this. he’s shown me glimpses, I’ve seen shades. The kid has got something, the calmness is the thing that jumps out to me.”
