Pundit Rio Ferdinand believes that Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka is ‘unreal’ – but doesn’t think he is a world-class player just yet.
Arsenal smashed West Ham United 6-0 on Sunday afternoon and Bukayo Saka produced a starring display.
Saka stepped up to score from the penalty spot to make it 2-0 in the first half, having been tripped by goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.
Saka missed from the spot at West Ham last season, so this was a huge moment for the Gunners wide man.
We then saw Saka produce a trademark goal, cutting in from the right flank to drive a left-footed strike into the net.
Saka has now hit 50 goals for Arsenal in all competitions and the sky is the limit for him at just 22.
Rio Ferdinand comments on Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka
Many will now discuss just where Saka sits in terms of the world’s very best wingers – and whether Saka is a world-class player right now.
Rio Ferdinand has now been asked about that very subject whilst speaking on the latest episode of Vibe With FIVE.
Ferdinand believes that Saka is an ‘unreal’ player and has been ‘top’ for Arsenal, but doesn’t think he is quite at ‘world-class’ level just yet.
Ferdinand is actually concerned about Saka, believing that he needs a rest given the enormous workload he has taken on in this Arsenal team.
In order for Saka to be considered ‘world-class’, Ferdinand wants to see Saka hit similar numbers to Mohamed Salah in front of goal and believes that he does have the potential to get there.
“Not yet, not yet,” said Ferdinand. “Listen, I think Saka has been unreal – I actually think he needs a bit of a rest, he’s playing so many games for a young kid. What is world-class? He ain’t done it in the Champions League, I’m talking like, the nitty-gritty stages. I’ve seen people hot up the group stages and never be seen in the knockouts. Until you do it, it’s very difficult.”
“Saka is top, don’t get me wrong, he’s not world-class yet. I don’t think he’d tell you he’s world-class! He’s got good numbers, but not Salah numbers; that’s world-class. If you’re talking world-class, he’s got to be sitting around them boys.”
“I think he’s got the potential to get there, 100%, but not yet,” he added.
Few 22-year-old players are considered to be world-class and it’s usually a tag which develops over time.
This is Saka’s first Champions League campaign and he has the chance to do something truly special with Arsenal, starting with a last 16 clash against Porto.
If Saka can take Arsenal to a Premier League title, shine in the Champions League and play a key role at Euro 2024 this summer, that world-class debate will only grow louder and louder.
