He is true fighter, He is a true definition of a captain’: Dimitar Berbatov names the one Man United ace he considered the ‘true captain’ during his time at the club
Dimitar Berbatov has named his ‘true captain’ of Manchester United during his time at the club.
Wayne Rooney is Manchester United’s all-time leading goalscorer with 253 goals for the Red Devils and the Englishman is a bonafide great at Old Trafford.
Sir Alex Ferguson sanctioned the signing of Rooney back in 2004 from Everton in a £30 million deal, which was a record for a teenager at the time, according to Sky Sports and the Englishman went on to become the club’s greatest-ever signing.
Former United striker Dimitar Berbatov, who played alongside Rooney for years at Old Trafford, has been asked who was better out of the Englishman and another ex-Red, Carlos Tevez.
Berbatov on Rooney
Speaking on Stadium Astro, the former Bulgarian striker gave his response to that question and didn’t hesitate in his answer.
“I will go for Rooney,” when asked who he preferred playing alongside. “He was like the captain of the team for everyone, he was helpful in any way possible.
“If a new player came in, he was the first to make sure these players felt comfortable and got to know them.
“On the pitch, he would run for you and sacrifice himself for the team. He would play wherever the coach wanted him to play and he would never complain. He was a true captain in my opinion, so I will choose him.”
Rooney’s impact
The English striker left the club in the summer of 2017, he returned to his boyhood club Everton. United signed Romelu Lukaku as a replacement for Rooney with the Belgian costing £75 million plus £15 million in add-ons.
Rooney will always go down as a club legend and the Englishman could have returned to the United coaching staff under Erik ten Hag, according to Stretty News, but he chose to turn down the Dutchman and has managed D.C United and Birmingham City since then.
A selfless striker and one who is clinical like Rooney could certainly be key for the Red Devils right now as their forwards are struggling to score goals at this moment in time.
