Arsenal star and Newcastle United could be a match made in heaven this summer.
That is the view of former Arsenal player David Hillier, who has spoke about Tierney leaving the Emirates Stadium following the conclusion of the 2022/23 Premier League campaign.
The Scottish defender has fallen out of favour at Arsenal, leading to speculation that he could leave the club. Newcastle have been heavily linked with a move, with reports claiming that the 25-year-old is expected to join the Magpies.
Eddie Howe is a big fan of Tierney and wants him at St James’ Park, and former Arsenal player Hillier believes that the left-back would be much happier in the North East compared to North London
David Hillier does not think Tierney is happy at Arsenal
Hillier as spoke on the Highbury Squad podcast on YouTube, and commented on Tierney’s future as an Arsenal player.
“I will say Kieran Tierney, he could’ve worked harder at being happy, he could’ve given a bit more,” he said.
“Tierney’s situation is nothing to do with playing a different way or adapting his game. I’m telling you, the boy is not happy, you can tell it a mile off
“He wants to be with his family, he’s a home boy. I truly, honestly believe I can see it in Tierney’s face, he loves Arsenal and playing for the club, but his heart is somewhere else, where his family is.
“There’s a club up there who have just gotten into the Champions League who aren’t far away from where his family is, and he’d be a dream at a place like that. Then you’d see the lad we all expected to go and progress at Arsenal.
“I’m not writing his Arsenal career off, but it’s about happy players.”
Newcastle move would be better
If Hillier is correct about Tierney and his happiness, this could be a rare occasion when geography actually helps Newcastle.
There is always talk about players preferring to live in London than the North East, but this could actually be the opposite. If Tierney does want to live closer to his family then a move to Newcastle is his best bet.
That would allow him to play at the top level for a Champions League club, whilst moving much closer to his family in Scotland. It could be the perfect situation.
In fact, Hillier believes that it is a move that could take Tierney to an even greater level. He looked like a fantastic signing for Arsenal back in 2019, but the defender has perhaps failed to completely live up to the hype in a Gunners shirt.
But the ex-player actually believes that a change in environment could get Tierney back to his best, and help him become the player everyone thought he was going to be when he arrived in the Premier League.
