Man Utd are keen on signing PSG midfielder Manuel Ugarte this summer and leaving no stone unturned to ensure this operation goes through this summer. However, the Ligue 1 giants are proving to be a tough nut to crack.
The Red Devils are aware they cannot put all their eggs into one basket and have to start looking at alternatives should they fail to sign the 23-year-old this summer. Dan Ashworth is expected to be all over this situation.
As per AS, one player that the Red Devils have identified for the defensive midfield position as an alternative to Ugarte is Atalanta midfielder Ederson. Man Utd view the Brazilian as a potential plan B for the Uruguayan international.
The report does add that Atalanta manager Gasperini sees Ederson as one of the most important players in his team and that the Italian club have no intention of sanctioning a sale for the midfielder despite surplus interest.
Ederson is your archetypal playbreaker who loves sitting deep in midfield and disrupting the momentum of opposition attacks. Man Utd were linked with a move for the 25-year-old in January but the transfer never went through.
GMS had revealed a month ago that the Italian club were willing to accept a £45m to sell Ederson this summer. It remains to be seen if Man Utd decide to make a bid somewhere in this region to tempt Atalanta to make a decision.
Ederson is not a priority for Man Utd but he is a good alternative to have in case the Ugarte deal doesn’t work out.
The Red Devils should continue pushing for the Uruguayan but his South American counterpart is right up there and let’s see how the club go about this signing in the weeks to come.
