Manchester United should explore a deal for Lyon playmaker Rayan Cherki this summer.

The Red Devils are poised to make multiple signings during the upcoming transfer window.

The club have already sealed an agreement for Wolverhampton Wanderers star Matheus Cunha, but they are open to signing another versatile forward.

Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo has been linked over the past few weeks, but a deal won’t come on the cheap, with the Bees set to demand between £50-60 million.

Newcastle United are also interested in landing the 25-year-old ace and could move into pole position to sign him with an early deal, according to The Telegraph.

In our view, the club should focus on purchasing Cherki from Lyon instead.

The 21-year-old had a sensational 2024/25 campaign with Les Gones. He registered 12 goals and provided 20 assists from 44 appearances in all competitions.

Cherki predominantly played as a right winger last season, but he is primarily an attacking midfielder.

The Frenchman created an exceptional 37 big chances in Ligue 1 and the Europa League last term. He should only get better as he enters the prime of his career.

Cherki does not possess a high top speed, but he tends to make up for it with his good physical strength, quick footwork and impressive ball control in the final third.

Release clauses are prohibited in Ligue 1, but clubs reportedly believe he can be signed between £20-25 million with his Lyon contract expiring at the end of next season.

He would be a no-brainer signing for United at that price, but it remains to be seen whether they can persuade him to join amid interest from arch-rivals Manchester City.

The Cityzens have today opened initial talks with Cherki for the number 10 position.

United face a tough task without Champions League football, but the club could get the upper hand over the Cityzens if they can guarantee him a regular starting spot.

This could mean Matheus Cunha and Cherki playing together in attacking midfield with Bruno Fernandes in the number eight role.

There is also a possibility that Cunha could start as the main striker with Cherki and Fernandes behind.

Amad Diallo could be a regular starter from right wing-back in both scenarios. Alejandro Garnacho could be shown the exit door to compensate for the money spent on new arrivals.
