Arsenal are interested in signing Italy star Riccardo Calafiori after a stunning campaign with Bologna, talkSPORT understands.
The Gunners are interested in bolstering their defensive ranks this season and have compiled a list of potential targets.
talkSPORT understands that Bologna star Calafiori is among them, though nothing is advanced in terms of negotiation yet.
Mikel Arteta saw his side finish runners-up to Manchester City for the second time last season, a position the Spaniard wants to rectify.
And signing a new defender is among his priorities, despite boasting the best defensive record last season in the Premier League.
Calafiori has become hot property over the transfer window having impressed for Italy during Euro 2024.
While the Euro 2020 winners had a poor tournament and crashed out at the first knockout round, the 22-year-old was a shining light for the Azzurri.
It follows a stunning campaign at Bologna where the defender played a huge role in their creditable third-placed finish in Serie A.
It will see Bologna play in the Champions League for the first time, though they are facing an exodus with coach Thiago Motta already joining Juventus and star striker Joshua Zirkzee linked with a high-profile Premier League move.
Calafiori is another who looks set to depart, with Arsenal leading the race for the former Basel ace.
However, several clubs are interested in the Italian, including Chelsea, Liverpool and Real Madrid.
Calafiori has been praised for his versatility to play at left-back and centre-back and has been denoted for his ability to operate in a hybrid role, stepping into midfield from an inverted position that has quickly become a key tactical decision under some of the top teams in Europe.
Juventus had been reported to be the frontrunners for his signature but Bologna director Giovanni Satori believes he will end up abroad.
“I think he will not end up joining Juventus,” said the club chief. “Probably he can go abroad, in case we decide to sell him.
“We’d like to keep Calafiori so let’s see what happens.”
Meanwhile, Arsenal could see midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga leave for Sevilla, potentially on a permanent deal or on loan with an obligation to buy.
