It was not only Erik ten Hag who had his Manchester United debut ruined by Graham Potter’s Brighton and Hove Albion on the opening day of 2022/23, Pascal Gross’ quick-fire first-half double downing the Red Devils on their own Old Trafford turf.
Christian Eriksen, starting in an ill-fitting false nine role that Saturday afternoon against The Seagulls, will not look back too fondly on his first Red Devils outing either, overshadowed by another veteran playmaker in the evergreen Gross.
“He’s a top player,” Potter had said of Eriksen ahead of that curtain-raiser with Manchester United, via The Metro. “You can see the influence he had on Brentford.
“His quality is undeniable. From a football perspective, he’s a great player to have in the Premier League and I’m sure he’ll do well for Manchester United.
“He’s a top player.”

Potter, a few months earlier, had dismissed suggestions that Eriksen was in line to join him at The Amex following his release from Inter Milan (Sussex Live).
But, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe a huge fan of the 48-year-old and installing Potter as his number one pick at Man United should the axe fall on Ten Hag, the Solihull-born tactician could yet find himself sharing a dressing room with one of the Premier League’s finest modern-day midfielders (Sky Sports).
There are a number of Man United players who feel particularly well-suited to Potter’s high-pressing, fluid approach. Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes, for instance. Whether we can realistically say the same of Eriksen, however, is less certain.
At 31, the Dane is younger than Gross and Adam Lallana, both of whom thrived under Potter at Brighton.
But, ever since picking up that injury against Reading in the FA Cup back in January, however, Eriksen has looked like a footballer at odds with the modern game, chasing shadows and struggling to exert an influence either in or out of possession.

Is there a chance that a player Potter labelled a ‘top’ talent as recently as 2022 could be one of those most negatively affected should Man United make a change in the dugout?
Such questions are, of course, merely hypothetical for the time being. But, like everything at Manchester United these days, much remains uncertain.
