IAN WRIGHT AGREES WITH JAMIE CARRAGHER THAT DAVID RAYA HAS BEEN THE PREMIER LEAGUE FLOP OF THE SEASON SO FAR
Jamie Carragher has claimed that Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya has been one of the biggest disappointments in the Premier League this season alongside his Manchester United counterpart Andre Onana.

Gary Neville was asking on The Overlap who his fellow pundits would pick as the Premier League flop of the season so far, and Carragher picked the Spaniard, with Ian Wright agreeing with him.

Raya joined Arsenal from Brentford on a season-long loan in the summer as manager Mikel Arteta wanted an upgrade on Aaron Ramsdale.

However, he has committed errors almost on a frequent basis so far, and Carragher has not been impressed.

“I would probably look at the two goalkeepers at United and Arsenal,” the Sky Sports pundit replied when Neville asked who has been the Premier League flop of the season so far.

“They have been poor, haven’t they? They are going to move on from Ramsdale and Man United are going to move on from (David) de Gea. It’s almost stayed the same or gone backwards, hasn’t it?”

“I think it’s a good shout, that one,” Wright added.

Raya committed two errors leading to goals in the 4-3 victory at Luton Town on Tuesday, and he has been a nervous wreck during most of his appearances.

He has made 15 appearances across all competitions for the Gunners, keeping seven clean sheets and conceding 13 goals, which averages 0.9 goal conceded per game.

Ramsdale has played seven times this term, keeping three clean sheets and shipping eight goals, which averages 1 goal conceded per game.

Raya has a 65.8% save percentage and 74.3% pass accuracy, while Ramsdale has a 61.9% save percentage and 65% pass accuracy.

The England international has not committed any errors leading to goals this term (with Declan Rice helping to prevent one against Brentford), while his Spanish counterpart has made three errors.

Ramsdale has 4.9 xG (expected goals) conceded and -2.09 goals prevented, while Raya has 12.2 xG conceded and -0.8 goals prevented.

Statistically, there has not been much to separate the duo, but Raya has been a disappointing signing so far as he has failed to bring stability to the Arsenal defence.

Arteta is sticking with him as the number 1 for now, and while Ramsdale could get a chance to impress and get handed a run of games to do so, having two goalies of similar qualities is not likely to help matters given the pressure both are under, and the Englishman may need to leave for Raya to start performing at the expected level.
