Ivan Toney has shared that Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was ‘bantering’ him during Arsenal’s 3-0 win at Brentford, as he told England’s YouTube channel.
The striker shared that he ‘couldn’t say too much’ because he was going to be seeing the goalkeeper for England duty a few days later – with the duo currently preparing for the Three Lions’ clash against Italy on Friday night.
There seems to be a bit of a rivalry brewing between Toney and Arsenal, remember a certain Troy Deeney being in a similar situation?
Well, over the weekend, when Arsenal dispatched Brentford 3-0, it was Gabriel’s turn to do the same on Twitter, with Toney, understandably so, getting stick from the away fans.
Nonetheless, with Toney on England duty, he was asked about whether it’s easy putting that rivalry aside, now that he is friends and teammates with Ramsdale.
“Obviously the Arsenal game,” laughed Toney. “Going back to the Arsenal game. Ramsdale, he’s the keeper, I see him just bantering me about fans. I was biting my lip.
“To be fair, they were two or three nil up. I thought ‘fair enough’. I thought ‘I am going to be seeing him in about a day. I can’t say too much’.
“Listen, if we were winning 3-0, then I think I would have done the same. Once you are on the pitch, then you are playing against people that want to beat you.
“But when you are in the England camp, then it’s kind of like you are obviously friends and teammates. It is what it is. It’s football and that’s how things go.”
It’s like Troy Deeney all over again, he had some harsh words to say about Arsenal during his days and now it’s Toney’s turn.
Whatever your opinions, one thing is for sure, it’s entertaining and it’s great to see players aren’t acting like robots.
Last season, Toney talked the talk before he mocked Arsenal on social media and now Gabriel dealt with him over the weekend and did the same.
One thing is for sure, the reverse fixture is going to be spicy and Toney will sure get a warm welcome by the home fans at the Emirates.
