Arsenal have very much introduced themselves to Manchester City this season. Not only did they sign 2 exceptional players from them in the summer, but their former assistant coach is leading the Gunners to a potential title-winning season, claiming the Premier League crown from Pep, his former boss.
As a neutral, this is certainly shaping up to be an exceptional title race. But there’s been a further layer added to the thrilling story.
According to Sport, Arsenal have joined the list of clubs interested in signing Ilkay Gundogan. The Germany international’s contract at the Etihad Stadium runs out this season, and he doesn’t look set to sign another one anytime soon.
Mikel Arteta knows Gundogan from his time at the Etihad Stadium and sees him as the ideal option to have in their midfield. Of course, with Mohamed Elneny out injured for a sustained period of time, this is the position where Arteta will need to strengthen the most in the summer
They don’t come much cheaper than Gundogan, who’ll be available as a free agent. The Spanish report suggests that Pep Guardiola has accepted fate that he’ll leave, with Barcelona his preferred destination
With nothing set in stone, Arsenal will remain lurking in the hops they can secure a late swoop if any deal falls through. You can rely on the Gunners board to secure the right players nonetheless.
In my opinion, it would take a lot of obstacles for Gundogan to join Arsenal. Barcelona are the bigger club so he would almost certainly prefer to join them. Furthermore, with the Gunners and current club Manchester City battling for the title, loyalty comes into question here.
