The Gunners were woeful against the Hammers, but with Nottingham Forest up next in a few days, they can’t dwell on the result.
Arsenal knew it had the perfect opportunity to put serious pressure on Liverpool in the title race, and an injury-riddled West Ham side, at home, looked to be the perfect tonic for Mikel Arteta’s side.
But they didn’t get the memo.
A Jarrod Bowen header just before halftime sent the Emirates quiet and after a first half that saw the Gunners struggle mightily in front of goal with a lack of creativity, as Mikel Merino couldn’t double down on his efforts against Leicester, it was a horror show for Arsenal as it slumped to a 1-0 loss to West Ham.
In total, the hosts had a whopping 20 shots to five, but Mikel Arteta’s side only managed two on target to further highlight their attacking deficiencies.

The loss now means that if Liverpool, who no doubt would have got a shot of confidence after Arsenal’s defeat, beat Manchester City at the Etihad, the title race is as good as over with the margin being 11 points if Arne Slot’s team are victorious.
But do the Gunners even have a reason to be slightly optimistic now after this horror loss?
“We have to go through the pain of defeat and a big part of the performance as well,” Arteta said via arsenal.com. “That’s what we’re going to need on Wednesday, to put in a different performance and win the game. Let’s go through the pain; let’s analyse, look at ourselves in the mirror and on Monday we go again.”
Mikel has more energy than most fans to get up and go again with a tough away trip against Nottingham Forest up next.
Depending on Liverpool’s result, the mentality of the squad will be put to the test, especially if the Reds do claim three points and virtually secure the league title, and with so many games left, Arsenal could simply end the year with a whimper.
We are still at a loss to figure out why not one soul was brought into the club when it was clear to every person on the planet that some form of reinforcement was needed.
Now at the mercy of Liverpool, if Arsenal do lose the title, we will look back on January as the month the club lost it, and sorry Mikel, but while you are ready to attack Forest, the fan base is left lamenting the fact that the club didn’t spend when it needed to.
And the West Ham result is proof of that.
