Mikel Arteta has provided an update on the futures of experienced midfielders Thomas Partey and Jorginho, with six months remaining on their contracts
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that contract discussions with experienced midfielders Thomas Partey and Jorginho will be postponed until later in the season. Both players are out of contract this summer, making them eligible to negotiate pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs.
Arteta, however, has emphasised the importance of maintaining focus on Arsenal’s title ambitions before addressing their futures.
“What I can say is that it’s not just about what I want; it’s about what both players have in their minds and their situations,” Arteta said
“I don’t want to start these conversations now. I want to have them much later because the focus has to be on what we have to do in the season. They understand our intentions, and then we’ll decide what’s best for everyone.”
Arteta praised both midfielders for their contributions and reiterated their value to the squad. “They are such a value in the squad. I want to keep them in the right mindset because the most important part of the season is coming now,” he added
Amid a challenging injury list, including Bukayo Saka’s potential three-month absence following hamstring surgery, Arteta is turning to Arsenal’s academy for reinforcements rather than the transfer market.
17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri has been deployed out wide, while 18-year-old Myles Lewis-Skelly has impressed at left-back despite being a midfielder.
The focus is on the players that we have,” Arteta explained. “If something extraordinary in the market comes up that we can afford and that will make a real impact, we’ll consider it. But right now, our priority is what we have.”
Arteta underscored his commitment to promoting academy talents before exploring external options. “The first thing we want to do is look at the academy. Can we get what we need there? That’s option number one. If not, we’ll explore other avenues,” he said.
On the performances of Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly, Arteta was full of praise. “They are playing because they deserve to play, not because of injuries. We had other options, but they’ve earned their places.”
