Arsenal defender William Saliba believes he is among the best players in the world but admits he is still missing one key element to be considered the undisputed ‘best defender in the world’—major silverware.
The 23-year-old has emerged as one of the standout players in the Premier League over the past two seasons, playing a pivotal role in Arsenal’s 2022-23 title challenge.
After spending several loan spells away from the club, Saliba has solidified his place in Mikel Arteta’s side and developed a strong defensive partnership with Brazilian teammate Gabriel.
Saliba made history last season by becoming the first outfield player in Arsenal’s history to play every minute of a Premier League campaign. His contributions helped Arsenal finish just two points behind Manchester City and claim the best defensive record in the league.
In addition to his club form, Saliba has become a regular for France, earning 23 international caps and playing a prominent role for Les Bleus in Euro 2024. Despite his rising profile, Saliba believes winning titles is the next step in his development
Speaking to Fox Sports Mexico, Saliba expressed his confidence in his abilities but emphasised that trophies are what separates good players from the best.
“I have been on the right track for both seasons, mainly last season,” Saliba said. “I’m perhaps on my way to becoming the best defender in the world. I think I’m one of the best at the moment, but to say that, I have to win some titles. I think that’s what I’m missing right now.”
He added, “If you win titles, you’re good, and if you don’t, you can’t say you’re the best. That’s what I believe. I’m one of the best in the world, but I need those trophies.”
