‘I have this feeling that they will struggle like Chelsea last season if this three positions are not strengthen this summer’ – Paul Merson makes bold Manchester United prediction for next season
Paul Merson has predicted Manchester United to finish higher next season than they did in the Premier League this year.
Erik ten Hag’s side endured their worst-ever Premier League campaign under the Dutchman, finishing eighth in the Premier League – their worst finish in 34 years. Their 14 defeats in the season was also a Premier League-era record.
Despite winning the FA Cup after defeating rivals Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley, it was a tough season for Ten Hag and Co. United were knocked out of Europe in the group stages, after finishing bottom of their Champions League group.
The Dutch boss has come under scrutiny and his future at Old Trafford is being questioned. Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who is not thought to be convinced by Ten Hag, is faced with a decision before pre-season.
Whether or not Ten Hag will take the club forward, Merson believes that three teams will be aiming to finish in the top four next season after missing out this year. Speaking to Sky Sports, the former Arsenal star said: “I’ve got a feeling for next season. I think Tottenham have got to concentrate on one thing.
“I think top four, Chelsea are going to be there, Manchester United can only get better – top four’s hard now.”
Chelsea finished sixth, losing three games less than United’s 11 and ended the season just three points behind Spurs in fifth. Ange Postecoglou’s side were close to a fourth placed finish but, ultimately, defeats to Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and City in the final weeks of the season cost them a spot in the Champions League.
