Arsenal were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Newcastle with Mikel Arteta’s Gunners now heading to Dubai on a warm-weather trip as they look to reset their season
Martin Odegaard has ordered Arsenal to learn the lessons of being humbled by Newcastle in the Carabao Cup.
And Odegaard wants Mikel Arteta’s squad to use the warm-weather trip to Dubai to look at themselves in the mirror, in a bid to re-boot the club’s season.
Arteta saw his side crash out of the semi finals with a whimper at St James’ Park. Arsenal lost 2-0 on the night and 4-0 on aggregate, to find themselves well beaten by a hungrier side.
Odegaard reckons Arsenal got what they deserved – and have to use the experience to make themselves better ahead of bigger challenges to come.
Arteta’s men are still in the thick of the title race with Liverpool, and have reached the knockout stages of the Champions League. The squad flew to Dubai on Thursday to spend a week re-charging their batteries.
And Odegaard said: “It’s a tough one to take and it’s frustrating. We had a big goal to go to the final, and we believed it was possible to make it happen.
“But I think the way we played throughout the game, and throughout the two legs, we didn’t deserve it. We have to look at ourselves, improve and learn from it.
“We’re all disappointed, and we should’ve done better. We may be a young squad, but we’ve played big games and we’ve played at Newcastle many times, so I still think it should’ve been possible to do better. But now we have to take the lessons and move on.”
Odegaard reckons the trip to Dubai has come at a good time, and he added: “I think it will be good, [because] it’s been a busy schedule, a lot of games and very intense.
“So it will definitely be good to go away and get the energy high again, come back stronger and push for the big things until the end of the season.
“Last year I think we came back so strongly afterwards. I think it’s good in the middle of the season with so much going on, so we have to go there and make sure we get a good amount of rest, but work hard as well.”
