Real Madrid could reportedly move to sign Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard over a year after the Norweigian playmaker left the European champions to join the north London club.
According to Marca journalist Ramon Alvarez de Mon, the Spanish giants have been impressed with what they have seen from Odegaard this season, with the 24-year-old Arsenal’s joint-top scorer in the Premier League with six goals as well as four assists.
Odegaard’s form has been instrumental in Arsenal’s ascent to the top of the Premier League, and according to Alvarez de Mon, Madrid could move for their former player, with Los Blancos already having first refusal on any potential transfer for the midfielder.
The Marca journalist said: “I understand that Real Madrid have the right of first refusal for Martin Odegaard. There is a chance they are looking into exercising this clause as his talent is very special and he spent little time in Madrid.”
With Odegaard being named captain of Arsenal this season and playing a huge role in the Gunners’ rise to the Premier League summit, it will have to take a massive bid from Madrid to convince Mikel Arteta to allow his skipper to leave in the coming transfer windows.
At 24, Odegaard is already one of the best playmakers in football and one of the top midfielders in the Premier League, and whilst the pull of Madrid will always be there, the Arsenal star’s experience at the club could be enough to reject a return to Spain.
Odegaard signed for Madrid as a 15-year-old as arguably the most hyped up teenager European football had seen for quite some time, yet as we know, the midfielder failed to make the grade and has since found his calling at Arsenal as their midfield general.
And it’s because of this past experience at Madrid that could lead to Carlo Ancelotti’s side struggling to sign Odegaard, with the midfielder likely to have doubts over how regular he will be a starter and if abandoning the Arsenal project will be worth a return to Los Blancos.
