“I want to” – £65m speed machine opens door to Arsenal or Newcastle move as both teams meet player to seal future contract for the summer!
Edson Alvarez has opened the door for a potential move to Premier League duo Arsenal or Newcastle United, telling De Telegraaf that he wants to reach the ‘next level’ after a spell at Ajax.
If the Mexico international hopes to attract interest again this summer, however, an upturn in his performances is probably required.
Alvarez, like many at the Johan Cryuff Arena, has fallen short of his previously impeccable standards following the departure of talismanic head coach Erik Ten Hag. But form, as they say, is merely temporary, The Athletic reporting that Newcastle and Arsenal are just two of the clubs keeping tabs on the one-time Celtic target.
Alvarez missed out on a dream move to Chelsea last summer. But the 25-year-old remains confident that another opportunity will arise sooner rather than later.

“I mourned for one day, and then showed that I am a strong person. Of course, the disappointment lasted for a while. But I believe that everything happens for a reason,” Alvarez explains.
“I came to Ajax to learn, to enjoy, and to reach the next level. Of course, my focus is 100 per cent on Ajax at the moment. But if something good comes along next summer, which is good for Ajax and for me, then I want to take that opportunity,” Alvarez adds.
Alvarez would provide some genuine cover for Thomas Partey at Arsenal. The Gunners have only lost three Premier League games this season. And two of those – Manchester United and Manchester City – came when the Ghanaian was unavailable.
