‘I will choose him over Martinelli’: Danny Murphy claims Liverpool have a player who’s been even better than Gabriel Martinelli this season
Liverpool forward deserves to be in the Premier League Team of the Year this season.
That’s the view of former Reds midfielder Danny Murphy. Speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s FIVE YouTube channel, Murphy was asked whether he’d pick Salah over prolific Arsenal duo Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka.
“Salah’s just done what he’s always done, which is amazing given Liverpool have been really poor,” said the pundit.
“I’d have to have Salah [over Martinelli and Saka]. Just those amount of goals in a poor season with Liverpool, [he] deserves great credit.”
Given that Mo has bagged more than both Arsenal forwards, we don’t think this is such a controversial choice from Murphy. Gunners fans may disagree!
Salah makes his case
Up until the start of April, absolutely nobody would have put Mohamed Salah in their Teams of the Season. But since April Fools Day, the Egyptian has been a man on a mission.
In that time, Salah has bagged eight goals in nine games. He even had room to miss a penalty against Arsenal, as well as one back in March against Bournemouth.
Had he buried those two kicks, the 30-year-old would have already cracked 20 Premier League goals for the fifth time. Instead, Salah needs just one more in the last three games to hit that tally. Given his form right now, you wouldn’t bet against him doing that.
Still, both Saka and Martinelli do deserve being mentioned in the same breath as Mo. This season at least.
With 13 goals and 11 assists, Saka is the only player to hit double figures in both metrics so far this campaign. Martinelli meanwhile has 15 goals and five assists, including a strike home and away against Liverpool. The form of both may yet drag Arsenal to an unlikely title
And yet, as Murphy points out, Salah has still outshone them. Even with the Reds way, way off the pace, our No.11 has out-scored two of the season’s most celebrated players. For that reason alone, we agree with Murphy. Both just twenty-one, Arsenal’s lads are sure to get even better. But they’ll never be as good as our Mo.
