IAN WRIGHT GIVES VERDICT ON MANCHESTER UNITED V ARSENAL VAR CONTROVERSY

Ian Wright has said on Match of the Day 2 on BBC One that Gabriel Martinelli’s goal for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal against Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United away from home at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday was correctly disallowed.

The Arsenal legend has said that in the modern game, in the build-up to the disallowed goal, Arsenal playmaker Martin Odegaard’s challenge on Manchester United attacking midfielder Christian Eriksen was a foul.

Former Tottenham Hotspur star Eriksen was bundled over by Norway international attacking midfielder Odegaard just inside the Arsenal half.

Brazilian forward Martinelli was slipped through by Bukayo Saka, and he brilliantly clipped the ball past United goalkeeper David de Gea.

It was a stunning goal, but it was chalked off.

VAR advised referee Paul Tierney to look at the pitch-side monitor, and he decided to disallow the goal.

Arsenal legend Wright has said that VAR was going to rule out that goal from Martinelli, pointing out that they had failed to make the right decisions during Chelsea against West Ham United and Newcastle United versus Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday.

Wright said: “In this day, that’s a foul. When I saw that, they are going to give that even though they had a complete nightmare yesterday, VAR, I couldn’t see them not giving that.”
