Arsenal are closely monitoring the future of Dani Olmo, with reports suggesting the midfielder could be released on a free transfer next week due to Barcelona’s ongoing financial crisis. The Premier League club sees a potential opportunity to bolster their squad in January, especially with injuries mounting within Mikel Arteta’s team.
La Liga has played a pivotal role in this unfolding drama, refusing to grant Barcelona permission to register Olmo for the remainder of the season.
The Spanish football governing body initially allowed a temporary registration for Olmo until the end of the calendar year, contingent upon Barcelona demonstrating financial improvements. However, with no significant progress made, La Liga has now blocked the Catalan club from extending his registration.
Barcelona’s appeal to the Commercial Court in Barcelona to overturn the decision was dismissed, further complicating their situation. La Liga issued a statement following the ruling, emphasising their stance:
“La Liga has today learned of the ruling … rejecting the request for the provisional registration of Dani Olmo until 30 June 2025, on the grounds that none of the necessary conditions for the adoption of an interim measure have been met.
“The ruling also stresses that: ‘The purpose of allowing additional spending is so that a long-term injury does not weaken the team’s competitiveness, not to use a long-term injury to allow the registration of players whose salaries exceed the limit, which is what FC Barcelona is attempting.’”
Barcelona’s last remaining hope lies in an appeal to a magistrate’s court on Monday, a critical juncture as it falls just a day before the registration deadline for the remainder of the season. Failure to secure a favorable ruling would make Olmo a free agent, potentially opening the door for Arsenal to make a move.
The Spaniard, who impressed during this summer’s European Championship, has been linked with a switch to North London. His agent, Andy Bara, was recently spotted in Manchester on Boxing Day, which he described as a “holiday,” fueling speculation about Olmo’s future.
