Granit Xhaka has now admitted that he ‘cried tears of joy’ after leaving Arsenal for Bayer Leverkusen in the summer transfer window.
The Swiss international spent seven years as a Gunner. He had his best-ever season in an Arsenal shirt last term but decided to leave the club at the end of the campaign. Xhaka has now had his say about his Emirates exit.
Granit Xhaka says he cried tears of joy after leaving Arsenal
Arsenal signed Granit Xhaka back in the summer of 2016, when Arsene Wenger was still at the club.
The midfielder came in with a lot of hype, but his discipline attracted a ton of criticism. He was even the enemy number one at one point after his outburst in a game against Crystal Palace at the Emirates in 2019.
However, Xhaka’s redemption at Arsenal was nothing short of inspirational. He went from being the villain to one of the most loved players at the club last season, with fans singing his name every week.
After a memorable individual campaign, Xhaka decided it was time to move on in the summer, and Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen signed him for £21.4 million (BBC) before the start of this season.
Now, in an interview on Das Werkself Freundebuch on Bayer Leverkusen’s official website, Xhaka has opened up about how he cried when he left Arsenal.
He said: “Absolutely. I’m a very emotional person, I like to cry and I’m not ashamed of it.
“Of course, I also cried for joy at times. For example, when I made my transfer here to Leverkusen. I also cried tears of joy because I really wanted to go back. I think it’s also part of it as a person.”
Arsenal are missing Xhaka
Granit Xhaka was one of Arsenal’s best players last season.
The Swiss midfielder scored nine goals and provided seven assists for the Gunners in all competitions and was one of the biggest reasons why Mikel Arteta‘s side were in a title race.
Following Xhaka’s departure, Arsenal signed Kai Havertz to play in that position, but unfortunately for the German, he hasn’t quite been as comfortable as his predecessor in that role.
If Xhaka was still at Arsenal, the Gunners would probably be at the top of the Premier League table right now, just like they were at this point last year.
