Arsenal were in desperate need of a win as they travelled to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea in a Premier League clash on Sunday afternoon.
Mikel Arteta’s side came into this fixture on a poor run of form, and a response was required
It was an even first half, that Arsenal would have been happier with had Kai Havertz’s strike against his former club not been ruled out for offside.
Arsenal will also feel that Levi Colwill could have been sent off early on.
Things continued in the same vein after the break, before Gabriel Martinelli finally made the breakthrough on the hour mark. However, ten minutes later, Pedro Neto fired the hosts level from range after switching flanks.
A 1-1 draw does little for the Gunners’ title hopes, other than perhaps end them.
Arsenal player ratings vs Chelsea
David Raya – 7
Not hugely troubled throughout the game, and commanded his box well, and showed real composure with the ball at his feet at times.
Ben White – 6
Largely coped well with Neto whilst they were engaged in a head-to-head battle, and also with being on a yellow card for the majority of the match.
William Saliba – 6
William Saliba produced a composed performance at the back, without ever looking overly troubled.
Gabriel Magalhaes – 6
Like Saliba, Gabriel was comfortable at the back, as Arsenal’s centre-back duo held the Blues at bay.
Jurrien Timber – 7
A fantastic performance from Jurrien Timber, who slotted in at left-back. He defended tenaciously and got forward aggressively at every opportunity. Timber promised Arsenal fans that the team would improve against Chelsea, and on a personal level he delivered on that vow.
Thomas Partey – 4
A uninspired showing in the middle of the park from Thomas Partey. Having had his career derailed by injury in recent seasons, he has defied the odds to make himself a key figure in this Arsenal team once again, but slowed his side down in possession far too often this afternoon.
Martin Odegaard – 7
Having returned from injury as a late substitute against Inter Milan last time out, Martin Odegaard was afforded a start today.
Arsenal fans have missed Odegaard in his absence, and the Norwegian playmaker showed why at Stamford Bridge, as he provided the assist for Martinelli’s goal and led the press relentlessly.
Declan Rice – 6
Competed fiercely against Chelsea, but was unable to make much of a difference in the final third.
Bukayo Saka – 4
Bukayo Saka struggled to impose himself on the game in the first half. The winger became somewhat more influential as the game went on, without dazzling, and was unable to produce any of the magic that Arsenal fans have come to expect from him. There will also be concern as he limped off before the end.
Gabriel Martinelli – 8
Martinelli is fighting for his Arsenal future at the moment and produced his best performance for some time this afternoon. He was the Gunners’ most dangerous threat throughout his time on the pitch and deserved his goal.
Kai Havertz – 7
Thought he’d put the Gunners ahead on his return to Stamford Bridge, only for his effort to be ruled out by VAR for a marginal offside. Led the line well, and was unfortunate that the ball didn’t quite fall kindly for him on a number of occasions.
