“I’ve Always Liked Him…” Klopp Reveals Admiration For Arsenal Star Who He Says Liverpool Need To Stop On Sunday
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has identified Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus as a key threat that the Reds must stop if they are to secure a result at the Emirates this weekend.
The Brazilian was bought from Manchester City where he had established himself under Pep Guardiola as a world class striker and he is not new to the rivalry between Manchester City and Liverpool. He has hit the ground running at a flying Arsenal side that has only lost once this season and topping the Premier League table.
The Brazilian had the annoying habit of scoring against the Reds during his time at Manchester City, and Klopp says he has always been an admirer of the striker:
“I don’t know him on a personal basis, but I’ve always liked him as a player. I know City wouldn’t have sold him to any club, but with Arsenal the distance was enough, geographically. He’s an exceptional player, you always say that. The Gabriel Jesus role at City was a nine and a winger. Last year, everybody said City had no number nine. He was still there, but he played obviously from the wing and now he can play his role.”
“The third goal last night [against Bodo/Glimt] was a nice set up, so he is full of confidence, plus the quality of top-class players around him. He’s flying in this moment, that’s clear. If you’re not playing against them, It’s easy to enjoy what he;s doing. We need to make sure he stops flying for a weekend.”
As Klopp says himself, Jesus is “flying” at the moment. The 25-year-old has scored five goals and contributed four assists in 10 appearances this season, but that doesn’t tell the whole story.
He has been integral to the Gunners’ strong start to the season, which sees them top the Premier League table after eight games. He could arguably have more goals considering the number of chances that have come his way.
It means that Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk will need to be at their very best if they are to keep Jesus quiet. Otherwise, it could be a very long evening for Liverpool on Sunday.
