Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has refuted suggestions that Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid are holding talks for Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood.
Greenwood confirmed his departure from Getafe last weekend following a successful season-long loan with the Spanish outfit.
Under Jose Bordalas, Greenwood plundered an impressive 10 goals and six assists in 36 appearances across all competitions.
The Englishman led the side to a 12th-placed La Liga finish.
The elephant in the room is now determining Greenwood’s future even as the summer transfer window edges closer. The 22-year-old’s exploits piqued the interest of multiple top clubs in Europe, all believed to be keen on adding him to their ranks and offering him his next permanent home.
Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund have all been mentioned as teams open to signing Greenwood. It’s believed that two unnamed Premier League outfits are also eyeing him.
United want to sell Greenwood but only for the right price. The Red Devils would also be open to another loan but this time, with an obligation to buy for a set price. If such arrangements fail to materialise, Greenwood being brought back into the fold at Old Trafford has not been entirely ruled out.
Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl was recently asked about the prospect of the Bundesliga side pursuing Greenwood. Kehl refused to definitively dismiss the idea as he insisted Dortmund’s full attention remains on their Champions League final clash against Real Madrid.
It was subsequently relayed that Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid are leading the race to secure Greenwood’s signature.
However, according to Romano, nothing is advanced on either the Atletico or Dortmund fronts.
The Italian journalist revealed on his daily briefing, “Let me be clear guys, Man United want to sell Mason Greenwood.”
“Another loan would only be possible if they can’t find a solution on a permanent deal. Their priority is to sell the player.”
He added, “There’s interest in him from Spain, England, Germany and also Italy but at the moment I’m not aware of talks with Borussia Dortmund or Atlético Madrid.”
