Man United have been given the chance to sign Ben Chilwell from Chelsea this summer.
Manchester United Football Club have been dealing with injuries galore in the left-back position of late. Tyrell Malacia hasn’t played football in close to eighteen months at this point, while Luke Shaw will always pick up injuries.
Many assumed that as a result, Erik ten Hag would dip his toes into the left-back market during the current summer window. That hasn’t happened so far – though it could change over the last couple of weeks of the window.
One man who is available is Ben Chilwell. According to talkSPORT, United have now been ‘offered the chance’ to sign the 27-year-old this summer.
Chilwell has fallen out-of-favour at Chelsea, with Enzo Maresca telling the Englishman he is not part of his plans going forward.
The left-back was not involved in the Chelsea squad for the Manchester City game last weekend, with Marc Cucurella now the first-choice option for Maresca.
Chilwell is currently said to be assessing his options at this moment in time. He has two years left on his deal.
Injuries is the big issue here. I’d argue that Chilwell spends more time sidelined than Shaw – which is less than ideal.
United would have to fork out a decent wage to Chilwell, too. I’m not sure the club have that much wiggle room in that regard at the moment – and any deal could be solely contingent on selling a left-back first.
This just feels like a bad idea. Why replace an injured player with another one? I genuinely believe the Chilwell ship has now sailed and if United are intent on signing a left-back, the club should look elsewhere.
