Matheus Cunha could travel to Manchester for a medical this week once Manchester United make a formal approach to Wolverhampton Wanderers, according to the Daily Mail.
The South American has agreed terms over a five-year contract with the option of an additional year to join the Red Devils, but they have yet to trigger his £62.5 million release clause, which has to be paid in three instalments of £20.85m over two years.
Man United want to complete the deal for Cunha before the end of this week, and he is expected to be their first signing this summer.
They are also in talks with Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo over a transfer, and the 25-year-old Cameroon international will cost them and other interested suitors around £50 million following a return of 20 Premier League goals and seven assists this term.
A move for Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap is believed to be of interest to the decision-makers at Man United given his £30m release clause, but it is impossible for them to sign three attacking players worth around £150m without first selling players.
Losing the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur last week saw them miss out on £100m due to failure to qualify for the Champions League, and they will have to limit their spending this summer.
The Red Devils could be forced to sell captain Bruno Fernandes, with the Portuguese considering an offer worth £200m over three years from Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal.
Man United could find it hard to reject a bid in the region of £100m should the Middle East club bring such an offer to the table, and a major squad rebuild would depend on how much they can generate in sales.
They also need to bolster their options in the midfield and goalkeeping departments, and the lack of European action next season could help them perform better domestically.
