Manchester United are being linked with a move for Tottenham Hotspur’s Ryan Sessegnon after both Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer missed out.
United struck one deal with Tottenham in August as Sergio Reguilon arrived on loan.
The Spaniard was snapped up as short-term cover for Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, who were both ruled out through injury.
Reguilon has now been sent back to Tottenham, potentially leaving United short at left back – and United are now being linked with another Spurs player.
The Independent’s Miguel Delaney reported in his Reading the Game column on Friday that United’s conversations with Tottenham have raised the possibility of Ryan Sessegnon heading to Old Trafford.
Manchester United could finally sign Ryan Sessegnon
United may replace one Tottenham left back with another as Sessesgnon emerges as a potential January signing.
The 23-year-old made his first appearance of the season on Friday night, playing seven minutes off the bench as Spurs beat Burnley in the FA Cup.
It’s unclear if Sessegnon has a role to play under Ange Postecoglou and United may now believe that a deal can be done.
United have been linked with Sessegnon for years now, going back to his emergence as a wonderkid at Fulham.
The Guardian reported way back in December 2017 that Jose Mourinho wanted to bring Sessegnon to United in a £25million move.
That move just didn’t materialise but United were back in for Sessegnon come the summer of 2019 as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer chased his signature.
Sessegnon instead ended up at Tottenham but Erik ten Hag could now succeed where Mourinho and Solskjaer missed out, with an Old Trafford move at least being floated.
Sessesgnon hasn’t lived up to his potential yet
Much will depend on when United expect Malacia to return but United could look to try and get Sessegnon back on track.
Once tipped for super-stardom, Sessegnon has flattered to deceive in nearly five years as a Tottenham player.
Sessegnon has never quite managed to fit in as a left back and it’s difficult to feature as a left winger when Son Heung-min is around.
The former Fulham talent has never really found his feet at Spurs and a fresh start at United could help him get his career back on track.
Letting one Spurs left back leave in order to bring in another is a curious situation but United now appear to be exploring a deal for Sessegnon more than six years since first targeting him.
