Arsenal are expected to push ahead in their pursuit of a new centre-forward in the January transfer window despite having Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah at their disposal.
Mikel Arteta’s frontline has been the most scrutinised area of the Gunners squad in the opening half of the season. Bukayo Saka (nine) and Gabriel Martinelli (four) have both struggled to replicate the form of last season but it has been Jesus who has been faced with the most criticism.
The Brazilian had scored seven goals this season yet has come under pressure for his lack of clinical edge in front of goal. In the recent defeat to West Ham United, the 26-year-old squandered a big opportunity at the back post to result in intense calls for a move for Ivan Toney.
And in yesterday’s win over Fulham, Arteta may have dropped his biggest hint of his intention to improve the area. Jesus was dropped to the bench for Nketiah, the first Premier League game on the bench since the 1-0 win at Everton in September.
The Gunners boss claimed before the game that the decision was a tactical one. “It’s about the three changes and bringing the energy in as well.” he said. “We played less than 72 hours ago and we are going to need a lot of energy to beat Fulham.”
Arteta has often defended the quality throughout his side. But recent performances have made it almost impossible to ponder the possibility of signing a new striker for the second half of the season.
Brentford’s Ivan Toney continues to be the obvious choice although Brentford’s struggles over the last few weeks could mean the Bees may be reluctant to let their talisman go.
The England international wouldn’t need any time to adjust to Premier League football and should strive for the opportunity to help the Gunners to the league title. Alternatives, such as Victor Boniface or Dusan Vlahovic, offer something different in the box with their tall build but could be cheaper.
Whatever happens between today and the deadline closing (February 1), Arsenal have to give themselves the best chance to become champions of England.
