Manchester United appear to have stepped up their efforts to sign Benjamin Pavard, who’s reported to be keen on joining the Premier League side.
The Old Trafford outfit are working on finalizing the exits of Harry Maguire and Eric Bailly and simultaneously bringing in a new defensive option to ensure Erik ten Hag’s squad doesn’t lack depth in the area going forward.
According to The Daily Mail, United have held discussions over a move for the France international, who’s ready to join Ten Hag’s project. He only has one year remaining on his contract worth a reported £83,000-a-week in Munich.
Bayern Munich, who conceded three goals to RB Leipzig in the DFL-Supercup on Saturday, are reluctant to cut ties with their reliable defender.
Despite the signing of former United target Kim Min-Jae from Napoli, Thomas Tuchel wants to keep the 27-year-old. His technical quality in possession and ability to play as a centre-back as well as right-back makes him a dream defensive option for top European clubs.
As per Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, United’s first official offer for Pavard was rejected by the Bundesliga giants. Still, the Frenchman remains keen on joining the Red Devils. He adds that there’s a “verbal agreement in principle.”
Should Bayern refuse to budge from their stance, United might move to Nice centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo. They sent their scouts to watch the former Barcelona man in action against Lille on Friday.
As far as the transfer figures are concerned, Pavard might be the best available option for the English side. The likes of Todibo and Marc Guehi (also on the club’s radar) are likely to cost north of £40m thanks to their lengthy contracts at Nice and Crystal Palace respectively.
