‘Much cheaper to afford’: Journalist says Arsenal could sign ‘one of the best players in Europe’ instead of wasting huge money Ivan Toney and Victor Osimhen
Despite the fact Eddie Nketiah scored a hat-trick for Arsenal on Saturday, the Gunners continue to be linked with new strikers.
Indeed, while Nketiah was brilliant at the weekend, Arsenal are still being linked with new centre-forwards, most notably Ivan Toney.
The expectation in certain circles is that Toney will be signing for Arsenal in January, but according to Graeme Bailey, there’s another striker that Arsenal could ultimately end up moving for.
Speaking on the Talking Transfers Podcast, Bailey has talked up the idea of Santiago Gimenez joining Arsenal instead of Toney, suggesting that an overall deal could be cheaper due to the fact the Mexican would command a smaller pay-packet.

Bailey shared what he knows about the Mexican.
“Gimenez is one to watch out for for Arsenal as well, we know Ivan Toney is the one who’s been linked, but Gimenez would be much cheaper in terms of wages than Toney. So is the deal more expensive? Possibly not. He will be on the agenda of an awful lot of teams come the summer. I don’t think we’ll see Gimenez leave in January, but we have seen reports that he’ll be available for €40m, if that is the case, he will leave in January, but I think the chances of Feyenoord letting one of the best players in Europe leave for €40m, I don’t see it myself,” Bailey said.
Risky
While this is a move that is easy to get excited about, we must also acknowledge the risk attached here.
Ivan Toney is proven at Premier League level and he would almost certainly suit this Arsenal side to a tee.
Meanwhile, Gimenez has only been scoring goals in in the Eredivisie, and, with all due respect, that league has produced its fair share of striking duds over the years.
When you’re challenging a team like Manchester City for a title, you can’t afford to penny-pinch and take risks, and while Toney may cost more, he could well be worth it.
