Arsenal hold an interest in Wolves forward Matheus Cunha but would face a huge battle landing him during the transfer window while the Brazilian is involved in a fight for survival at Molineux.

It is understood that Arsenal’s interest in the 25-year-old was sparked before the injury of Bukayo Saka, who will be out for “many weeks” with a hamstring problem suffered against Crystal Palace. Raheem Sterling is also out with a knee problem to limit Mikel Arteta’s forward options.

Cunha, who arrived from Atlético Madrid two years ago and eventually signed permanently for £44 million, has been on Arsenal’s radar after his form over the last three campaigns. In his only full season in the Premier League he scored 14 goals in all competitions and this season has put in eye-catching performances despite Wolves struggling.

With Wolves in the bottom three for much of the campaign, they are fighting to preserve their top-flight status for an eighth successive season and are thought to be extremely reluctant to let one of their key players leave in January.

Cunha has two full seasons left on his current terms at Wolves and the club are looking for him to commit his future for longer after making a positive impact on the team since his arrival from Spain. He was previously at Red Bull Leipzig and Hertha Berlin in Germany after starting his career in Switzerland with Sion.

Wolves manager Vitor Pereira has admitted he is braced for offers for Cunha but is determined to keep the Brazil forward during the January transfer window.

“I hope that he stays with us a long time but I understand that, as a special player, he will have opportunities in his career because he is not only a special technical player, he also has a good personality. He can take the ball in a moment of pressure and make magic from nothing,” said Pereira.

Pereira will take his 100 per cent record into Wolves’ match against Tottenham this weekend, having defeated Leicester and Manchester United in his first two games in English football. He will be reunited with Ange Postecoglou, who he faced earlier in his career.
