Arsenal could now sign one of the most sought-after players on the continent.
The Gunners have bided their time in the summer transfer window but with the Premier League season fast approaching, business is starting to really ramp up.
With Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson in talks to depart, the club are evidently in a much better position to outlay a substantial amount on a new centre-forward – which is an area that needs addressing.
With that said, Arsenal are now prepared to pay £52m to sign a very highly-rated forward in Europe.
Arsenal willing to pay £52m for Viktor Gyokeres
According to FootballTransfers, Arsenal are now willing to submit a £52m bid to sign Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres.
The Sweden international has been heavily linked with a move to North London for much of the window and now it appears they have raised the funds to make a formal proposal.
Gyokeres, who is regarded as ‘one of Europe’s most wanted players’ per Transfermarkt, is top of their striker shortlist with Ajax’s Brian Brobbey also thought to be an option they’re considering.
However, at this stage, no formal approaches have been made and there remains a gap in valuation between the two parties.
Sporting are holding out for at least £60m.
Viktor Gyokeres statistics
Gyokeres was one of the most prolific strikers in Europe last term following his switch from Championship side Coventry City.
The 26-year-old netted a staggering 43 times whilst laying on 15 assists for Sporting and has been subjected to interest from Tottenham Hotspur, too.
When asked if Arsenal will sign a specialist striker this summer to replace Kai Havertz, Mikel Arteta remained coy in his answer.
“He (Havertz) has played mainly in two positions, as an attacking midfielder and as a nine, and yeah, he ended the season really strongly in that position,” Arteta said, via ESPN.
“But he offers a lot of versatility and we have players up front that can in different positions, and that’s great. That brings more competition, more options, and hopefully more goals and better team.”
